my favourite tiktoks from autism tiktok compilations i sent my family to watch - part 1 ☆゚.* [CC]

Today i decided to remove the following clip from my video:

My reasoning is that i felt the statements “The puzzle piece is a hate symbol” and “Asberger is an offensive term, and is being removed as a diagnosis it is all autism spectrum dissorder” were too lacking of nuance to the point i felt uncomfortable keeping the clip in the compilation.

Before i continue further: this is not to criticise the poster of this clip. Do not give any hate twords this creator for their views shared in this clip. What i want to do here is to critesice the lack of nuance of these type of statements that i have come across multiple times over the years, when i went more in to learning about my diagnosis (autism in this case).

When it comes to the puzzle piece i have heard a bit about it’s symbolism and tried to do some research on it, but i will say i have not, and still do not, have enough energy to do propper good in-depth research - as i have extremely limited amount of energy and trying to pass school right now. All i know is that a lot of people hate it, some strongly dislike it, some have no strong opinion, some like it, some love it, and some have a mixed bag of feelings around it. I personally don’t feel like i know about the symbol enough to have a super strong stance on it. I personally don’t love it and don’t use it myself. I have heard that it can be helpful for others and there are people who like it, so as long as no one is telling others to like or not like, or use or not use the symbol - as long as its not harmfull - then i don’t see an issue with people using the symbol for themselves. Again, as i said, i have not been able to do propper in-depth research on this symbol, but that is why i felt “The puzzle piece is a hate symbol” would be wrong and unfair of me to display, when that is a strong claim/opinion/statement i can’t say that i can back up personally. I am saying that i am pretty ignorant in this topic and want to learn more when i have the capacity for it. I feel like there is so much more i can say on that, but i’ll leve it here on the topic of this first statement. I would love to make a blog post when i dive more into the history of the puzzle piece and why it seems to be so divisive.

A lot of what i said above goes for the statement of “Asberger is an offensive term, and is being removed as a diagnosis it is all autism spectrum dissorder” as well. I am lacking in propper in-depth research so i feel i can’t back this up and i feel it’s way to lacking in nuance from the knowledge i do have. I will say that i personally dont use the term for myself, even though “Asberger’s syndrome” is what it written on my papers. I have multiple reasons for this, but thats for another time. However, i do not think “Asberger” as a term in inherently offensive by itself. Some people still prefer the term and it is still an official diagnosis other places in the world (like it still is here in Norway technically - under the umbrella “Autism Spectrum Dissorder” - as i am writing this, from my understanding (according to this thing: https://nhi.no/sykdommer/barn/autisme/asperger-syndrom). Don’t take my word for it though. This is something i want to dig deeper into when i have the capacity). There is a lot i can say here, but to make it short: as long as it is used in a respectful manner (asking what people prefer and and prefer not using, not using it as an insult, not being used to separate Asperger from Autism in a Asberger supremacy or otherwise harmfull manner) i don’t see the problem with using the term Asberger, personally.
